Presentation “Dr Jon Orrell – Climate Change”. Dr Orrell gave a presentation on the possible global effects on our future life. He showed a series of slides indicating possible water level impact together with possible effects of carbon emissions. He also confirmed the overwhelming majority of people think this could be a natural cycle. He recommended several reports worth reading to give us all an insight into possible life style changes and future fuel requirements. These include “The Stern Report”, the Hirsch Report, Richard Branson Ind. Group Report and the Transition Handbook by Professor Laycock from the London School of Economics. He also encouraged us to “Google” for more information on climate change – Climate Change without the hot air. Dr Orrell indicated the many ways in which we can improve our lifestyle and the battle against lessening carbon emissions, obesity and so on. The floor was then opened for a question and answer session.
Jim Blake gave an interesting up-date on the progress of the Skate Park and if there are any people or companies that can help with haulage for stone to the site and top soil away then please get in touch.
Mark Jackson updated us on the Revive Project. He confirmed the uptake for reduced rate sessions at Osprey Leisure Centre and the Halloween event both exceeded expectation. There will be a Community Day this year during the sailing festival. Wren Court in Fortuneswell is hopefully going to have flower planters to enhance the area and this project will be in conjunction with the YOI. However, they are still waiting for the go ahead from the local authority.
Treasurers Report. Andrew confirmed the balance of £9,301.81 with £3,000.00 ring fenced for the Fairfield Project, funds being held for Revive and £500.00 from Court Leet for the Governors Garden project.
Secretarys Report. Gillian confirmed Boots Chemist will not be relocating. Anyone facing difficulty with the positioning of the new street lamps should contact Mr MacDonald – Team Manager for Scottish and Southern/County Works Team at Piddlehinton Depot. Better still contact Councillor Tim Munro who volunteered assistance.
Any other business. Andy Matthews briefed us on Renewal and Regeneration Low Carbon Communities Project.
Mike Holman gave an update on policing on the Island and was pleased to tell us the slips in the FPN are being used to pass information anonymously .
The Chairman thanked the Boat That Rocks for their hospitality and Ray and Margaret Tout for the raffle.
Next meeting Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy Tuesday 4th May.
