Portland - a Rights Respecting Community (RRC)
The aim of the Portland RRC project is to strengthen our local community by bridging the gaps between groups and encouraging them to work together to improve life chances. The project will utilise UNICEF’s Rights Respecting Schools (RRS) Initiative - a project where the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is used to build a culture of respect within all members of the school community, accepting they have rights and responsibilities as its starting point.
All Portland schools are at different stages of the RRS “journey” and are making good progress towards accreditation. We hope therefore that the concepts will become familiar to parents and families and will act as a catalyst to promote a common vision and sense of belonging for all of us on Portland; an island where diversity is valued, strong and positive relationships exist and everyone has similar life opportunities.
A RRC Steering Group has been set up to work with the schools to take the initiative into the wider community with the aim that all Portland organisations and individuals will follow the RRS philosophy when dealing with each other and, in particular, children and young people. We hope that this will lead to increased co-operation between groups and the agreement of sustainable strategies that will empower all of us to build trust and work together to improve our community and build a legacy for the future.
We are inviting all groups, organisations, associations, businesses and, indeed, individuals to join us in the “journey” to making Portland a Rights Respecting Community.
This page will be regularly updated to provide information and promote Portland’s Rights Respecting initiative.
